Stewart Klein, entertainment editor for Channel 5’s 10 O’clock News, hosts a screening of the sports noir film, Body and Soul (1947). Body and Soul, which Klein describes as a "marvelous old-fashioned melodrama,” was directed by Robert Rossen and starts John Garfield and Lilli Palmer. The film is about a boxer who stands up to his corrupt promoter and refuses to throw a fight. It was released the same year that the Hollywood blacklist was instituted by the House Un-American Activities Committee. After the screening, Klein argues that the ethical considerations and stylistic choices of the film ultimately reflect the experiences of the writers, actors, and directors who were facing the blacklist. The screening is followed with questions from the audience.
