Ages 15+
Prerequisites: Students must successfully complete the following skills test on the first day: Swim 300 yards continuously using 100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface-dive 8 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the starting point and exit the water without using a ladder, within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Overview

Become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard. First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications included.

Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the last date of the course. As wells as complete the online Blended Learning before the first day of class The link will be emailed to you once you have registered for the class.

Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
  • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Failure to pass either portion of the prerequisites or meet the requirements for certification will not result in a refund.

Withdrawal from the course within 2 weeks of the course start date will result in a 0% refund.

Course Length:

The Blended Learning course is 27 hours long based on 10 students. This class includes a 7-hour on-line portion that must be completed prior to the first day of class. Participants must complete all 27 hours to be eligible for certification.

Class meets Fridays 5-9 pm, Saturdays 9 am-6 pm, and Sundays 9 am-6 pm.

About Your Visit

How to access 92NY events during construction:

  • Events in Kaufmann Concert Hall, Weill Art Gallery, Buttenwieser Hall, and Arnhold Studio: Use the 92nd Street entrance. A Box Office agent will assist you.
  • All other programs: Use the Lexington Avenue entrance at 91st Street (South Building). To reach the North Building, use the 3rd-floor walkway.
