Cartoonists at Work

Jan 10, 2002

Radio host Leonard Lopate moderates a panel discussion with cartoonists Roz Chast, staff cartoonist for The New Yorker; Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor for The New Yorker; Salih Memecan, political cartoonist for the Turkish newspaper, Sabah; and Doug Marlette, Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of the comic strip, Kudzu. The panelists consider whether cartoonists are seen as artists with a sense of humor or as writers who can draw. They also discuss each of their paths to becoming cartoonists, the relationship that exists between cartoonists and their readers, and the strategic use (or lack of use) of words in political cartoons. The discussion is followed by questions from the audience.
