"I discovered the 92Y Unterberg Poetry Center’s 75th anniversary project, 75 at 75, which invited authors to listen to recordings from the archive and write a personal response. Dionne Brand wrote about a reading by Adrienne Rich. It was recorded live at 92Y on October 14, 1991. In Brand’s personal response she referenced Rich’s poem, 'From an Atlas of The Difficult World.' As I read the poem, I reflected on the various students who study voice with me at 92Y. I’ve had students of all ages from 10 years old to 85, men, women, boys and girls and the common thread between them all is that they want to free their own voice and not be afraid of hearing it and letting it out! My students take voice lessons to improve their singing and in doing so they build the confidence to use their voice to express who they are. 92Y gives people a safe place to explore themselves and free their inner voice no matter where they are on their life-journey or where they’ve come from." – Sarah Tolar

Silent No More

By Sarah Tolar; Jamie Reynolds on piano; Kyle Landry, producer

Round and round her memory’s gone
Spinning away
Up and down the night runs on
Sleep rules the day
When will it end a small voice seems to say
But she holds it in
Silence once again
Wandering down his street alone
Chill to the bone
Wondering where it all went wrong
House not a home

When will it end a small voice seems to say
But he holds it in
Silence once again
Hear my voice don’t turn away
Hear my voice words that I’ve longed to say
Faded dreams echoing loud
Listen to the sound
My heart has found
Silence No More
(Whisper becomes a roar)

Disappear into the crowd
No one sees me
Sea of people all around
I’m left lonely
When will it end a small voice seems to say
But I hold it in
Silence once again

Hear my voice don’t turn away
Hear my voice words that I’ve longed to say
Faded dreams echoing loud
Listen to the sound
My heart has found
Silence No More
Silence No More
