Dr. Alex Rosen, former dean of New York University's Graduate School of Social Work, leads a seminar discussion about American values. This is the final part of a series exploring ethnicity and identity in American society. Dr. Rosen first works with participants to define some essential American values: achievement, materialism, and work. He asks the group to reflect on how these values change generationally and how they manifest in society. He contends, for example, that “in America, to be alive is to work” and that even wealthy Americans tend to stay actively employed in some capacity. Through this reflection and conversation, Dr. Rosen ultimately asks: “Is America a humane society?” The discussion includes participation from the audience.
