Psychologist and psychoanalyst Dr. Louise J. Kaplan gives a talk about sexual perversions in adults and examines how these perversions present differently in men and women. Author Martha Lear gives the opening remarks for the lecture. In this lecture based on Dr. Kaplan’s book, Female Perversions: The Temptations of Emma Bovary (1991), which was not yet released at the time of this recording, she discusses how perversions are rooted in gender and social stereotypes. She uses Emma Bovary, the protagonist of Gustave Flaubert’s 1856 novel, Madame Bovary, as a stand-in for her own female patients, highlighting how these stereotypes present in case studies. Kaplan also discusses the late writer Edith Wharton, who was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for her novel, The Age of Innocence. The lecture concludes with audience questions.
