Jeremy Dauber, Atran Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture at Columbia University, speaks about the films of Steven Spielberg. This lecture is one part of a four-part series on Jewish-American filmmakers. Dauber comments on Spielberg’s specific status as a Jewish-American filmmaker and cultural figure. He speculates on how Spielberg’s early life and experience in a Jewish family may have influenced his career and directorial style. Dauber also shares some film clips and comments on how Spielberg’s Jewish identity influenced some of his films, including Jaws (1975), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. (1982), Schindler’s List (1993), Jurassic Park (1993), and Saving Private Ryan (1998). The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
