America, 1970: Melting Pot or Fragmented Society?

Future Shock

Feb 24, 1971

Dr. Alex Rosen, former dean of New York University's Graduate School of Social Work, leads a seminar about racial relations in America. He starts the program by playing a recording of a panel he participated in during the Watts riots of 1965. One of the other panelists, Dr. J. Alfred Cannon, a black psychologist from Los Angeles, shares his positive reaction to the uprising as a black American. Dr. Rosen asks the seminar participants to respond to this sentiment and to reflect on the possible implications of polarization, the idea of the “melting pot,” and the state of inter-group relations in America. The discussion includes participation from the audience.
