Social psychologist Erich Fromm gives the third lecture in his series on humanistic psychology. In this lecture, Fromm continues his discussion of the unconscious and conscious mind, focusing on the problems associated with unconscious experiences. He explains the conditions of consciousness and the possibility of being aware of being conscious, using art as an example of a potential way to widen mankind’s conscious awareness. Fromm discusses the various filters that unconscious thought must goes through before becoming conscious thought, such as the social filter, the family filter, and the individual filter, as well as how unconsciousness is connected to the ego, superego, and persona. The discussion concludes with audience questions.
