Film critic and professor of film history Annette Insdorf speaks with Jack Kroll, critic-at-large for Newsweek, about his career and approach to criticism. Kroll discusses his experience reviewing both film and theatre, the structure of his work as a critic, and the ethics of criticism. He argues that people who write about the arts for a living have a “unique kind of responsibility” and that one of the most significant pitfalls of the profession is to shirk that responsibility by writing carelessly or dishonestly. The discussion is followed with questions from the audience.
