Michael Graves, Robert Schirmer Professor of Architecture at Princeton University, speaks about the role of composition in architecture. Through a series of slides, Graves explains “how modern composition carries meaning for us today” just as “the still life and genre painting carried meaning at one time.” He directly compares the composition of still life paintings to the composition of an architectural site plan, referencing an actual site plan he made for a complex of hotels at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. He looks closely at specific paintings and outlines the “meanings that these pictures carried…that we don't understand today.” Graves also speaks about the composition of some of his personal architectural projects. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
