Modern Jewish History: The Search for Jewish Identity

Feb 23, 1960

Author, lecturer, and philosopher Dr. Eugene Borowitz broadly discusses the philosophy of modern Judaism. This lecture is part of a series exploring the modern Jewish identity. Borowitz proposes the question “what does it mean to be religious as a Jew today?” He approaches this question through the perspectives of 19th century German Jewish philosophers, including Solomon Ludwig Steinheim, Form Stettner, Samuel Hirsch, and Hermann Cohen. He also distinguishes and discusses the work of German theologian Leo Baeck.
