Patterson Sims, curator of Modern Art at the Seattle Art Museum, moderates a discussion with sculptor Robert Arneson. Arneson, who is described as “redefining the parameters of clay as an expressive medium,” gives insights into his working process and artistic influences. He discusses his use of alternative materials like bronze, his pottery background, and how he uses art as a platform to respond to political issues. Arneson shares examples of his work throughout his artistic career, which began in the 1960s, including Self‑Portrait of the Artist Losing His Marbles (1965), Whistling in the Dark (1976), George and Mona in the Baths of Coloma (1976), Vince (1978), Hiroshima Urn (1983), and Ground Zero (1983). The discussion concludes with audience questions.
