Emmy Award winner Ross Mathews of The Drew Barrymore Show and RuPaul’s Drag Race joins his husband, Dr. Wellinthon García-Mathews, for a conversation about love, family, and their debut picture book, Tío and Tío: The Ring Bearers.
Fans of The Drew Barrymore Show have seen Ross Mathews and Dr. Wellinthon García-Mathews’ love blossom in real time — their heartwarming, funny, deeply relatable appearances on the show as a couple are always a delight. Inspired by their real-life wedding, Tío and Tío tells the story of two brothers traveling to Mexico to be ring bearers at their uncles’ wedding — and the surprising lessons they learn about family, cultural identity, and self-acceptance as they embrace their roles in their uncles’ special day.
Ross and Wellinthon bring their own perspectives to this special launch event — Ross as a master storyteller and LGBTQ+ advocate, and Wellinthon as an educator passionate about representation in children’s literature. Together, they’ll share the inspiration behind the book, their experience as tíos, and the importance of stories that serve as both mirrors and windows for young readers. As Ross puts it: “Weddings are scary for grownups, let alone little kids with a big responsibility! We were so touched by how seriously our nephews took their role at our wedding that it inspired us to write a heartfelt, funny, and cross-cultural story.” Dr. García-Mathews adds, “I’m proud to have created this book with my husband, showcasing our bilingual and bicultural heritage while helping children appreciate the significance of family, traditions, and cultural identity.”
Join the happy couple at this special launch event for tíos, tías, sobrinos and sobrinas of all ages and stripes — a heartwarming evening of conversation about true love and the real-life joy of embracing your whole self.
