Ethicist Dr. Carol Gilligan delivers the 2002 Monica Dennis Goldberg Lecture. She speaks about her research and her new book, The Birth of Pleasure: A New Map of Love (2002). In her book and lecture, Dr. Gilligan asks, “what would it mean to stay with pleasure?” She contemplates what people sacrifice or endure at the expense of their own happiness and considers what it would look like to instead pursue personal interests and desires. She also speaks about her previous work, including her first book, In a Different Voice (1982), and emphasizes the ongoing importance of listening and paying attention to girls. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
