The Composers: From Vaudeville to Yiddish Theater

May 07, 2007

Zalmen Mlotek, the artistic director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, speaks about American Yiddish composters. This is the second part of a two-part series on Yiddish music and theatre. Mlotek speaks about some of the specific composers and lyricists responsible for the early development of American Yiddish theater, including Jacob Jacobs and Reuben Doctor. He describes these composers as “the painters and architects” of the genre and "the heroes of this incredible art form." Mlotek also performs several Yiddish songs and provides English translations of the lyrics.
