Hellenism & Hebraism

The First Encounter - a lecture by Moses Hadas

Feb 10, 1966

Classical scholar and translator Moses Hadas speaks about the early encounters between Hellenistic and Hebrew culture. This is the second part of a four-part series about the relationship between ancient Greek and ancient Hebrew culture and literature. Hadas explains how Hellenistic philosophy turned inward and began to prioritize an understanding of the self over an understanding of the universe. He comments on the influence of emerging ideas including cynicism, stoicism, epicureanism, and Neoplatonism and explains how these ideas spread geographically towards Hebrew societies through the establishment of cities. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
