Diamond engagement rings have long been an integral part of the wedding tradition. Yet little is known about their origin story. Some believe the ring ritual was a niche practice until 1947, when De Beers launched the “A Diamond Is Forever” advertising campaign. In fact, diamond engagement rings can be traced back to the Renaissance. How diamond engagement rings evolved up until the modern era is a subject that’s been largely overlooked.
Join Marion Fasel, Christopher Young and Benjamin Zucker who will review The History of Diamond Engagement Rings from the 15th to the early 20th century, in a wide-ranging discussion that will go over the development of diamond shapes, significant ring styles as well as the rings of famous figures such as the crowned heart design poet Elizabeth Barrett-Browning received from Robert Browning around 1845 and the Tiffany & Co. ring Franklin Roosevelt gave Eleanor Roosevelt in 1904.
