Novelist Maurice Samuel speaks about his process of translating modern Yiddish poetry. This lecture is part of a series exploring the Yiddish language. Samuel discusses how Yiddish poets preserve their culture and spiritualism through poetry and explains how he balances the challenge of conveying the essence of the poems while retaining the original charm of the Yiddish language. He provides examples of verses of poems written in Yiddish and then translated to English. Breaking down the structure of the Yiddish language, he demonstrates its connection to other languages, such as Russian. The lecture is followed by questions from the audience.
