Novelist, translator, and lecturer Maurice Samuel speaks about the “biblical foundations of cultural creativity” in Jewish literature. This lecture is the fifth part of a series exploring the role of Judaism in the contemporary world. Samuel argues that, until recent history, the Bible had a consistent influence on “the cultural self-expression of the Jewish people.” He contends that Jewish literature, music, and poetry generally possessed a “parallelism of ancient ideas.” Samuel also comments on 19th and 20th century Jewish culture, the origins of Zionism as an attempt to “restore a machinery of Jewish creativity,” and its later retroactive redefinition as a response to Jewish refugees. The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
