Samuel Lipman, publisher of The New Criterion, moderates a discussion with Allan Bloom, philosopher and author of The Closing of the American Mind: How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy and Impoverished the Souls of Today's Students (1987). Bloom discusses the relationship between popular music, particularly rock music, and education in America. He examines how higher education has failed the American youth, detailing how a lack of books and fundamental resources has created a disconnect between education and young people, leading to the “music addiction of our time.” He claims that rock music has taken the place of books and reading, and that this phenomenon has had a powerful impact -- bridging the gap between the educated and uneducated. This discussion concludes with audience questions. Daniel Stern introduces the event.
