What is Government For?

Max Stier, Francis Collins, and Sheryl Gay Stolberg

May 22, 2025

What is the purpose of government, and what does it owe its citizens? From ensuring security and upholding rights to regulating economies and providing social services, governments shape nearly every aspect of society. But how expansive should our government’s role be? This program explores the fundamental responsibilities of government, the balance between individual liberty and collective good, and the philosophical movements that have shaped debates over big versus small government. From classical liberalism to modern progressivism, libertarianism to social democracy, we’ll examine how different ideologies define government’s role — and what that means for citizens today.
