Mirror, Mirror On the Wall: Women Writers Discuss Their Favorite Fairy Tales

Jun 03, 1998

Kate Bernheimer, editor of the anthology Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Women Writers Explore Their Favorite Fairy Tales, leads a discussion with some of the work's contributing authors, including Francine Prose, author of the essay "Sleeping Beauty"; bell hooks, author of the essay "To Love Justice"; and Vivian Gornick, author of the essay "Taking a Long Hard Look at 'The Princess and the Pea'." After Bernheimer recites the original versions of a few popular fairy tales, the contributing authors read passages from their own essays and share what inspired them to write about their selected fairy tales. They also discuss the female experience and the subversive elements that can be found in fairy tales. The discussion concludes with audience questions.
