Our Guiding Principles, Convictions and Beliefs

Given our fidelity to our core Jewish values, the following principles, convictions and beliefs, grounded in our 3,000-year old tradition, give expression to these values, reflecting a commitment to integrity, compassion, justice, and communal responsibility. They serve as guiding lights, illuminating our path toward a more ethical and meaningful existence, individually, collectively, and institutionally

We welcome all people and treat the newcomer, stranger and all who enter our doors as one of our own.

ואהבתם את הגר, כי גרים הייתם בארץ מצריים

“And you shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the Land of Egypt.” Deuteronomy 10:19

We believe all people to be sacred and imbued with infinite dignity and value.

גדול כבוד הבריות

“Great is the value of human dignity.” Talmud Brachot 19b  

We believe in the importance of radiating light within our community and beyond through education and enrichment, strengthening families, and the transformative power of the arts

ואתנך לברית עם, לאור גוים

“I have made you a people of the covenant, an assembled nation of light.”   Isaiah 42.6

We believe that life is built on concrete action that reflects the values passed down from generation to generation.

תַּלְ לא עליך המלאכה לגמור, ולא אתה בן חורין לבטל ממנה

“It is not your duty to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.” Pirkei Avot 2:19

We believe that good people can disagree. Do so honorably and graciously.

כל מחלקת שהיא לשם שמיים, סופה להתקיים

“Any argument that is for the sake of heaven will endure; an argument which is not for the sake of heaven will not endure.”  Pirkei Avot 5:17

We believe in the importance of speaking kindly and truthfully.

נצור לשונך מרע ושפתיך מדבר מרמה

“Guard your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.” Psalm 34: 14

We believe in the importance of civic engagement and working for the betterment of the United States, our home, and Israel, the homeland of the Jewish people.

ודרשו את־שלום העיר אשר הגליתי אתכם שמה והתפללו בעדה אל־יהוה כי בשלומה יהיה לכם שלום

“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” Jeremiah 29:7

We believe in the importance of seeking peace and pursuing it.

סור מרע ועשה טוב, בקש שלום ורדפהו

We believe in the importance of pursuing justice.

צֶדֶק צֶדֶק, תִּרְדֹּף

“Justice, justice shall you pursue.” Deuteronomy 20:19
