Share Our America has helped communities redefine public safety on high school campuses, equipped local business owners to become community champions, and inspired hundreds of everyday people to forge unlikely relationships — and we aren’t stopping there.
Initiated in 2021 by the 92NY’s Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact (the founders of Giving Tuesday, Ben Franklin Circles, Women inPower, and the Social Good Summit), we resource local leaders with the knowledge and materials to run their own Share Our America gatherings. We use research-backed facilitated dialogue, intergroup contact theory, and shared meals proven to repair relationships and bring us away from what we hear in the news and toward the people around us.
86% of Americans think we can improve our trust in one another. That’s why Share Our America allows participants to step outside preconceived notions, reconnect, and create the foundation for change in their community.
Participants become advocates and promoters for expanding the work locally, with many volunteering to co-organize future gatherings.
“In the conversations, there were things that I didn't agree with, but I didn't have that knee-jerk response of 'you're wrong.' It was more like, this person feels this way, but I still like them even though that opinion or that belief is a little weird for me.
Margaret, Davis CA
“I’ve learned that people are not always who the other person thinks they are. I found out that people listen. People are very thoughtful, and most everyone has a true belief in moving this world along with everybody having a say and everybody participating.
Ronne, Fort Lee, NJ
“I’ve been very impressed with the sense of community that has been built here. And I would like to find a way to spread that sense of community to my community out here, to Chadron, and then somehow cause that to be caught on to the rest of our state and our country because we so need to understand each other better than we do now.
Jim, Chadron, NE
“This experience reinforced my commitment to others by listening and honoring each individual with whom I encounter.
Carol, Chadron, NE
“These conversations are where real change can begin — and this was just the beginning.
Tanja, Memphis, TN
“It was great to hear someone’s deep conviction, sitting face-to-face, eye-to-eye, with someone whose ideas regarding abortion were the antithesis of mine. Just listening was incredibly valuable.
Lilian, New York, NY
“Our first gathering was a necessary catalyst for us as we continue to plan productive dialogue on what a safe community really means.
Pamula, North Penn, PA
“I’ve been happy to learn that ’re all so similar in our politics and even in the various religions. Our bottom line is still very much the same in how we care for people.
Kristy, Chadron, NE
“These conversations open up the door for relationships that can reach across communities and neighborhoods that never would have happened without Share Our America.
Will, Chattanooga, TN
“I think the exposure to a place I would never have otherwise thought to travel to, and the opportunity to meet and talk to people who live and have lived such different lives than I, those opportunities exceeded my expectations.
Lynn, New York, NY
